Atlas of Imagined Places

🏆 WINNER of the Illustrated Travel of the Year category, Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards 2022

The Atlas of Imagined Places: From Liliput to Gotham City (Batsford, 2021), is a comprehensive gazetteer of around 5,000 fictional locations set in the real world taken from film, television, literature, myths, comics, computer games and many other sources, written and researched by Matt Brown and Rhys B. Davies. I was commissioned to create eighteen antique-style maps of various regions and continents, each decorated with patterned borders and colour illustrations depicting scenes or characters from sources that appear on the maps. Each map features a range of illustrated icons to denote key fictional features including mountains, lakes, railways, shipwrecks and even ‘sky elevators’.
